MRC Wii Party Update

Since we have had so many people reading and working hard on earning their million words, we are giving some students the opportunity to attend the Nintendo Wii party even if he/she is not a member of the Millionaire Readers Club.  To earn an invitation to the party next Friday, February 25, this is what you need to do:

  • earn 300,000 or more words as calculated by Accelerated Reader
  • read 10 or more books as calculated by Accelerated Reader

The deadline to reach one of these goals is still February 23.  See Mrs. Overstreet if you have any questions!

Book Review: Yummy: The Last Days of a Southside Shorty

by G. Neri

Yummy is the center of this graphic novel based on real-life events.  Yummy was an eleven year old kid without much family or guidance.  He wandered the streets of Chicago looking for those things missing in his life, which for many kids in his situation, meant the lure of gang life was too strong to ignore.  He was a bully and a baby; he was tough and arrested several times, but had to have his teddy bear while in juvie; he defied the few that really tried to help him, but cried for his grandmother when scared.  While this is a short book, it is not an easy read.  You’re amazed at just how bad things got for him, wondered how he got there, and what you would do in the same situation.
